For this super cute project, it is my honor to introduce a very talented guest crafter! Nikell Jones is with womantoanother.com. On her website, she shares many DIY projects ranging from chic modest clothing, to how to make your own faux fur clutch! Her website is a place for women to share and learn from one another in a Christian environment. In addition to her wonderful DIY projects, she also shares devotionals, recipes, style, and nail art.
With her permission, we are going to learn from her how to make an adorable doggy dress! Add your own spin by using various colors, patterns, prints, and embellishments! For more information, please visit her website HERE.
~Scrap Fabric~ ~Straight Pins~ ~Tape Measure~ ~Fabric Scissors~ ~Sewing Machine~ ~Iron/Ironing Board~ ~Buttons, Snaps, or Velcro~
STEP 1 – Start by measuring your dog’s length, neck, and girth.
STEP 2 – For the top piece, cut a rectangle that is half the girth by half the length. Then, for the skirt piece, cut a rectangle that equals the girth by half the length. Remember to add your seam allowance.
STEP 3 – Hem the top and sides of the top piece; and the bottom and sides of the skirt piece. Then, sew a wide stitch along the top of the skirt piece and gather it until it equals the width of the top piece or half of the girth. Place the top and skirt pieces right sides together, lining up the raw edges. Pin and sew.
STEP 4 – For the waist strap, cut a strip of fabric that equals half of the girth X 6″. This will create a strap that is 2 1/2″ wide. Fold and press (iron) the long edges in 1/2″. Then, fold the entire strip in half and press, making sure to tuck the ends. Then, place one end of the strip on top of the dress just above the seam that connects the top and skirt. Try it on your dog to make sure the fit is snug but not too tight. Pin and sew following along the previously created stitches.
STEP 5 – For the neck strap, cut a strip of fabric that equals your dog’s neck measurements X 6″. Fold and press the long edges in 1/2″. Then, fold the entire strip in half and press, making sure to tuck the ends. Place the strap along the top edge of the dress, lining it up with the outer edge. Pin and sew one side in the same manner as you sewed the waist strap. Finish by attaching Velcro (or snaps) to the unattached ends of both the neck and waist strap.
~Embellish with buttons, or however you so choose.
~This project is a great way to utilize scrap pieces of fabric.
